Yves Bergeron - Écologie forestière, Université du Québec à Montréal Yves Bergeron is a professor of Forest Ecology at the UQAM and at the UQAT. Dr. Bergeron holds the NSERC/UQAT/UQAM Industrial Chair and the Canadian Research Chair in Ecology and Sustainable Forest Management, and he is known internationally for the exceptional quality of his research on boreal forest. He received numerous awards and has been a member of the Royal Society of Canada since 2010.

Joule Bergerson is the Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Energy Technology Assessment at the University of Calgary. Dr. Bergerson is an international leader in energy technology assessment, whose research on life cycle modelling has been adopted by both industry and policy-makers. Her models and first-of-its-kind Oil-Climate Index have resulted in significant improvement in the assessment of the carbon intensity of oil products throughout their life cycles and supply chains.

Updated, July 22, 2015 BERKES, Fikret, Distinguished Professor, Natural Resources Institute, University of Manitoba Fikret Berkes, Canada Research Chair in Community-Based Resource Management, is an influential scholar and international leader in the areas of commons theory and the interrelations between societies and their resources. He has been researching the conditions under which ‘the tragedy of the commons’ may be avoided. He has produced some 230 scholarly publications, including ten books, and contributed to the literature of linked social-ecological systems, resilience, and indigenous ecological knowledge.

Emmanuelle Bernheim leads an innovative empirical and critical research program on access to justice and the role of law in the (re)production of inequalities. Her research, which combine interdisciplinarity, partnership and action research, documents and analyzes exercise of rights in mental health, child protection and self-representation. Her work has supported the development of new practices both in community, judicial and hospital settings.

Emmanuelle Bernheim dirige un programme de recherche empirique et critique novateur sur l’accès à la justice et le rôle du droit dans la (re)production des inégalités. Ses recherches, qui allient interdisciplinarité, partenariat et recherche-action, documentent et analysent les conditions d’exercice des droits en matière de santé mentale, de protection de la jeunesse et d’autoreprésentation. Canada Research Chair in Rhetoric (2004-2014) and the first Canadian to be elected president of the International Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (2011-2015), he obtained in 2014 the Université du Québec's award for excellence in research. His works examine the novel or the writing of history in the light of the rhetorical tradition.

Charles N. Bernstein, MD biography Dr. Charles Bernstein, a graduate from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine, and the UCLA Division of Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program is Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Bingham Chair in Gastroenterology Research; and Director, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Clinical and Research Centre at the University of Manitoba. His main research interests are primarily related to IBD; in terms of optimizing management approaches; exploring predictors of clinical outcomes; and disease etiology including related to the gut microbiome. Dr. Bernstein has been a pioneer in Canada in harnessing administrative health data to study chronic immune diseases and in developing a population based database, the University of Manitoba IBD Epidemiology Database, that has both served as a model for the development of other similar databases in other provinces as well as a unique tool to study inflammatory bowel disease. More recently he has been actively involved in exploring the biological and clinical intersection between different chronic immune mediated inflammatory diseases. He has published over 740 peer reviewed articles, 29 book chapters, and is a co-editor of one of the seminal gastrointestinal clinical-pathology textbooks. His H-Index is 128 and has had over 77000 citations. In 2008 Dr. Bernstein was elected into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. In 2009, he was named the inaugural Bingham Chair in Gastroenterology at the University of Manitoba. In 2012, he was awarded the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology Research Excellence Award. Further, in 2012 he was elected into the Royal Society of Canada -Life Sciences Division of the Academy of Science. In 2016 he was named as the recipient of the Dr. John M. Bowman Memorial Winnipeg Rh Institute Foundation Award, recognizing outstanding research accomplishments by a senior University of Manitoba faculty. In 2019 he was awarded the Crohn’s and Colitis Canada Research Leadership Award.

Dr. Bernstein is nominated for his research contributions in three major areas of science, cell biology, retrovirology and molecular biology. His work has provided seminal information on the molecular structure and function of the retroviruses and he has developed and used new constructs of such viruses as transfection vehicles to examine problems in stem cell differentiation and gene therapy. Dr. Bernstein has also played a major role in an advisory capacity in Canada and elsewhere in the cancer field.

R. Albert Berry, Department of Economics, University of Toronto, has made profound contributions to the understanding of economic development processes, especially those in Latin America. His analyses of agricultural change, the functioning of labour markets and income distribution in Latin America have been highly influential in the elaboration of policies for development. His principal impact has been through his demonstration that small- and medium-scale enterprises are likely to contribute not only to greater equity but also to greater efficiency both in agriculture and in industry in developing countries.

BEYER, Peter – Faculty of Arts, University of Ottawa Peter Beyer has over the past decades become the foremost international expert on the relation between religion and globalization. Along the way he has introduced innovative developments in sociological theory of religion in the global context, and produced ground-breaking empirical research on religious and cultural diversity in Canada, the religious expression of Canada’s post-1970 immigrants and second generations, as well as contributed to Canadian and French-Canadian religious history.

Peter Beyer est devenu, au cours des dernières décennies, l’expert international principal dans le domaine des relations entre religion et mondialisation. Il a développé des approches novatrices dans la théorie sociologique de la religion dans un contexte mondial et a réalisé des recherches empiriques et innovantes sur la diversité religieuse et culturelle au Canada, l’expression religieuse des immigrants au Canada depuis 1970, et sur l’histoire religieuse canadienne et franco-canadienne.
