Dr. William Leggett, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Queen's University at Kingston, has made important contributions in the field of the relation between the physical environment and the life and behaviour of fish, both marine and freshwater, in particular fish migration, population dynamics and production. He pioneered the emphasis on abiotic variables as first-rank determinants of annual variations in production, a considerable advance on the biotic models formerly used in prediction. His work has married the disciplines of meteorology, physical oceanography and biology, thus opening new fields of understanding and prediction.

In Leiss's versatile studies of the impact of technological change a number of disciplines intersect: The studies began in philosophy, but quickly branched into political science and then broadened into sociology, to name three disciplines officially represented in Academy II. His achievements in each of these disciplines are outstanding enough to warrant election. His achievements in the combination - and under the auspices of environmental and communication studies as well - are unique and uniquely valuable, both to the academic community and to the public.

Thomas Lemieux is a labour economics specialist whose research aims above all to explain why inequalities have increased over the past three decades. He has also written important articles about salary determination, the underground economy and the impact of baby boomers on the labour market.

Lemire has launched imaginative interdisciplinary initiatives and provided the fields of history and of development studies with new ways of assessing women's long-term economic agency. Her current research further extends her ground-breaking analysis of the transition to modern society. Updated July 13, 2015 LEONARD, John, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Western University John Leonard is Professor of English at Western University. He is an internationally recognized scholar in renaissance/early modern literature, especially the poetry and prose of John Milton. He has won four international prizes, including Honored Scholar of the Milton Society of America (only the sixth Canadian to win this lifetime achievement award since 1948). The Times Literary Supplement has called him “one of the greatest Milton scholars working today.”

Dr. Dana Lepofsky is a Professor in the Department of Archaeology at Simon Fraser University. She seeks to understand the long-term relationships among Indigenous Peoples and their environment and to situate these relationships in current social and ecological contexts. She brings together diverse knowledge holders from within the academy and beyond and builds long-term meaningful partnerships with the descendent communities whose past she is privileged to study.

NOTICE LONGUE Serge Leroueil a grandement contribué à la compréhension du comportement des sols et plus particulièrement des argiles sensibles. Bon nombre de ses idées, incorporant les spécificités des sols naturels (anisotropie, microstructure et viscosité) et l’adaptation des concepts des états limite et critique au comportement des sols naturels constituent la base de la mécanique des sols moderne. Cette approche a eu un impact majeur sur la pratique de la géotechnique au Canada : elle a fourni un cadre de raisonnement pour l’étude des caractéristiques géotechniques des argiles sensibles de l’est du Canada et du comportement de ces argiles dans les problèmes de remblais sur sols mous, de stabilité des pentes naturelles et des pentes d’excavation. Ses récents travaux sur les problèmes de rupture des massifs de sols présentent un grand intérêt pour la gestion des risques naturels. Enfin ses travaux sur les sols partiellement saturés ont contribué à expliquer, entre autres problèmes, certains comportements inattendus et préoccupants observés dans des grands barrages canadiens. Le professeur Leroueil est probablement parmi la quinzaine de personnes dans le monde à avoir la meilleure compréhension du comportement mécanique et hydraulique des sols, allant des argiles molles aux roches tendres, saturées ou non. Louis Patrick Leroux is a playwright, director and scholar. A Professor in both the English and French departments at Concordia University, he is also the Founding Director of the Montreal Working Group on Circus Research and Associate Researcher at the National Circus School. In addition to his innovative research-creation work and award-wining publications on Québec drama, he has mobilized and spearheaded North American research into contemporary circus studies.

Dramaturge, metteur en scène et chercheur, Louis Patrick Leroux est professeur titulaire d’anglais et d’études françaises à l’Université Concordia. Fondateur du Groupe montréalais de recherches en arts du cirque, il est également chercheur associé à l’École nationale de cirque. Au-delà de son travail de pointe en recherche-création et ses publications primées sur le théâtre québécois, il est devenu une figure de proue du domaine des études sur le cirque contemporain.

Claude Leroy is an accomplished physicist of high calibre and plays a strong role in the training and development of young physicists in Quebec and in Canada generally. He has been involved in important experiments in low-energy, intermediate-energy and high-energy nuclear and particle physics. He has contributed in an important way in Electro-weak Interactions (including second-class currents, conservation of electron and muon numbers); Strong Interactions (including heavy-flavour production, diffraction and search for the Quark Gluon Plasma) and Calorimetry (he built the first calorimeter using silicon as a medium). He has lead the HELIOS Experiment Group at CERN responsible for the operation and physics analysis of the data from the calorimeter detectors system. He was one of a group of three leading this experiment which involved 22 institutes around the world and some 140 physicists in all. After completion of the HELIOS experiment, he joined the OPAL experiment at CERN as initiator of the building and development of the silicon microvertex detector used for charm and beauty physics. He was awarded a Killam Research Fellowship (1993-1995) based on a project centered on the ATLAS experiment (search for the Higgs particle(s) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN). This award combined with a sabbatical year (1996) allowed him to work at CERN on the preparation of the ATLAS project and on silicon detector studies. He is now the responsible of the ATLAS collaboration (involving about 2,000 physicists, engineers and technicians from around the world) for the radiation studies. He is leading this effort mainly at CERN, Prague and Dubna. He is also responsible of a program of semiconductor studies (silicon, diamond and GaAs) at CERN and Prague, in view of their application in high energy physics, in medical field and in space.

His book "The End of the World", published this year, describes, with stunning erudition and lively wit, the prospects for humanity's survival, given current trends. Professor J. J. C. Smart, of the Australian National University, writes, 'It could well be the most important book of the year'. Sir Martin Rees, F.R.S., calls it 'a marvellously provocative book', while Professor Quentin Smith, of Western Michigan University, roundly describes its author as 'one of the most original and interesting thinkers writing today'.
