Richard Kane

Richard Kane is one of the leading experts on the important area of algebraic topology which studies Hopf spaces. The major achievement in this subject, which originates with work of Heinz Hopf over fifty years ago, is the cohomological classification of finite Hopf spaces. This classification is largely due to J.P. Lin and to Professor Kane, and culminates in their proof of the Loopspace Conjecture, which is the most impressive piece of work in the subject.
Undoubtedly the major work in this area is Kane's recent book in which he recounts the details of this classification - a major triumph of modern mathematics and the subject of numerous articles and research papers by Kane over the past decade.
The techniques which Kane introduced during this work have found plentiful use in other areas of algebraic topology.
Dr. Kuo Kao

Dr. Kao has led the world in solving central problems in artificial hybridization of plants using tissue culture. His highly innovative contributions have helped Canada to achieve a preeminent international reputation in this field. He pioneered the production of cell cultures from protoplasts and was first to fuse protoplasts using polyethylene glycol. His fusion method is now standard for plant, animal and bacterial cells. Dr. Kao developed the first inter-family somatic hybrid cultures (soybean and tobacco) and demonstrated activity of both parental genomes. Dr. Kao also played a central role in develoloing haploid barley plants through both embryo and anther culture.

Dr. Gabriel Karl

Gabriel Karl has made outstanding contributions to theoretical high energy physics, and his work has been widely recognized internationally. His deep physical insight and his knowledge of mathematical methods led to the quark model of baryon resonances, based on quantum chromo-dynamics, which has been enormously successful in describing experimental results. His research is characterized by real originality, and also an ability to combine basic ideas from different fields as in the predictions of a new effect - 'neutron optical activity'. Continually he is invited to visit and address the staff of International Laboratories in his field. For two years he was the chairman of NSERC's High Energy Physics Committee.
Dr. George Karpati

George Karpati, Neuromuscular Research Laboratory, Montreal Neurological Institute, is one of Canada's most outstanding clinician-scientists. His studies of muscle physiology and the pathology of neuromuscular disease have brought him international recognition. His greatest achievements are in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a lethal genetic disorder due to a deficiency of the cytoskeletal muscle protein, dystrophin. He was the first to show the localization of dystrophin to the muscle fiber surface and to demonstrate a lack of dystrophin in the fibers of Duchenne patients. Karpati demonstrated pre-clinical success with adenovirus-mediated dystrophin gene replacement in mice. His research is not confined to Duchenne MD, but covers a broad range of basic and clinical studies on myopathies and other neuromuscular disorders, and utilizes a broad spectrum of technologies from clinical diagnosis, histology, cytochemistry, molecular biology and genetics.
Dr. Kenneth Kasha

Dr. K.J. Kasha has made some fundamentally important contributions to crop science, including the development of a method for making haploid barley plants from immature embryos. This technique has been extremely useful in helping to understand mechanisms controlling chromosome replication and elimination and in the regulation of gene expression. It has also been useful in a practical sense in introducing new genes into barley that have improved both feed and malting properties. The impact of this work has brought him international and national recognition, including an honorary degree and the award of the Ernest C. Manning Award for outstanding innovation by a Canadian. He has held important offices in Canadian Societies and was the founding Director of the Guelph/Waterloo Biotechnology Centre.
Dr. Morris Kates

Dr. Morris Kates received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Toronto in 1948. His doctoral thesis described the first successful synthesis of a natural phospholipid, dipalmitoyl lecithin. Since 1951 when he joined the Division of Biosciences, National Research Council, and later in 1968 when he transferred to the Dept. of Biochemistry, University of Ottawa, his investigations dealt with the chemistry, biosynthesis and metabolism of lipids in plants and microorganisms. He discovered in membranes of extremely halophilic bacteria a new class of lipids derived from a phytanyl diether of glycerol. Dr. Kates has published two hundred and ten research papers and twenty-one review articles on lipolytic enzymes, and plant and bacterial lipids, and has established himself as one of the
leading investigators in this field.
Mr. Naïm Kattan

Depuis son arrivée au pays, en 1954, M. Naïm Kattan, qui avait déjà une grande expérience du journalisme, s'est intéressé à tous les aspects de la vie canadienne et surtout canadienne-française. Les livres qu'il a publiés, aussi bien que ses articles dans divers journaux et revues, prouvent que cet écrivain, curieux de tout ce qui intéresse la vie intellectuelle d'aujourd'hui, a su comprendre la vie littéraire du Québec contemporain ainsi que des pays qui nous entourent.
Son livre « Le Réel et le théâtral » montre bien que l'accord est toujours possible entre l'originalité de la pensée et un langage bien structuré. Critique littéraire perspicace et brillant, esprit universel, M. Kattan est un analyste attentif des littératures canadienne et québécoise, ainsi que des littératures américaines et étrangères.

Dr. Paul Kebarle

Professor Paul Kebarle has had an increasingly productive professional career in mass spectometry. During years of dedication he has developed fundamental ideas and data that are being used not only in physical chemistry, but also in several other disciplines. His work on gas phase solvation equilibria is recognized as a classic study. A study of ion-molecule reactions in the gas phase that was first systematically developed in his laboratory has become the outstanding source of thermo-chemical information for ion-molecule aggregates. He has carried out fundamental work on intrinsic basicities and acidities. The impact of his work is reflected in the numerous invitations he receives, particularly from physical organic chemists, to present lectures.

William Keith has established himself as the major authority on 'the rural tradition' in both prose and poetry. But his interests are wide, and his publications have been in a variety of fields. Dr. Geraldine Kenney-Wallace

Geraldine Kenney-Wallace is widely recognized for her important contributions to our knowledge concerning very fast molecular relaxation and interactions. She is an acknowledged authority on the application of laser spectroscopic techniques in physical chemistry. Early studies using nano- and picosecond lasers led to the measurement of the life-times of solvated electrons, the confirmation of two-photon photoionization of arenes. in polar liquids, and the clarification of the structures of molecular solvation clusters. More recent researches using subpicosecond non-linear optical spectroscopy in the femtosecond range elucidated the nature of ultra-fast molecular dynamic processes in liquids including the direct observation of the temporal evolution of intramolecular vibrations.
In addition, her significant involvement in science policy matters has recently been acknowledged by her appointment as President of the Science Council of Canada.
