Professor William Costerton has focused his research on the nature and importance of biofilms. His early studies on bacterial envelopes and their structural biology led to his pioneering observations on microbial associations in growth forming consortia attached to biological and physical surfaces. Biofilms form on rocks in streams, waterpipes and oil pipelines, on biomembranes and urinary catheters, and on surgical prostheses. All have practical outcomes. He has done detailed research and has written and lectured persuasively to science, medicine, and industry emphasizing the biological, ecological, economic, therapeutic and health importance of recognizing and understanding biofilms in their various guises; we now act upon this knowledge.
SHORT CITATION
Professor William Costerton has made many contributions to our understanding of microbial physiology. He has pioneered the research of how microbes associate to form “biofilm” and the profound effect these have on many human activities, from oil pipelines to surgical catheters. Dr. Costerton has also lectured widely on the importance of such biofilms and the need to act on this knowledge.
Ronald Coutts

Ronald Coutts is one of Canada's leading pharmaceutical chemists. He has won an international reputation for the application of sophisticated physical and analytical techniques to studies of drug metabolism and toxicology. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chemistry and of the Chemical Institute of Canada, and was awarded the D.Sc. of the University of Strathclyde in recognition of his outstanding contributions. Professor Coutts has published nearly 100 research papers and many reviews. He has been in demand as a visiting professor and as a lecturer at international meetings. He is a superb teacher and has attracted a group of graduate students and post- doctoral fellows. Dr. Coutts has been a member of several MRC committees and is active in faculty administrationand in the University Faculty Association. At present, Dr. Coutts is especially interested in the biological and medical applications of the methods he has developed.
Current research interests are:
I. Analysis of drugs, drug metabolites, endogenous amines and amino acids, and environmental chemicals in biological (urine, blood, CSF, brain, etc) and environmental samples, and in foodstuffs.
2. Metabolism of numerous drugs in neonates, adults, elderly patients and animal models; microbial metabolism of various antidepressant drugs, endogenous amines and prodrugs; drug metabolism 'in vitro' using pure human cytochrome P450 isozymes.
3. Identification and effects of inducers and inhibitors of drug metabolism; pharmacologically active metabolites; drug/drug interactions.

Roger Cowley has an outstanding international reputation for the use of neutron and X-ray scattering to study the structure, excitations and phase transitions in condensed matter. His experiments have elucidated the novel behaviour of the quantum fluctuations in superfluid helium and low dimensional magnets as well as characterizing the effect of the fluctuations on phase transitions where they continue to provide challenges to accepted theories. He is a Fellow of the Royal Societies of London and Edinburgh.

Cox of York University is a specialist in the field of international political economy and is one of the most respected scholars in the world on the implications of labour's changing role in economic production for international political relations. His book "Production, Power. and World Order: Social Forces in the-Making of History" has been widely praised for its insights and the breadth of its scholarship. Professor Cox has also made important contributions to the study of the politics of modern international organizations. Prior to his career as a university professor he distinguished himself as the Director of the International Institute of Labour Studies in Geneva.

Walter Craig is one of the world leaders in nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) and their applications, particularly as they apply to the mathematical study of water waves. He has made deep and lasting contributions to others areas of PDEs which are among the milestones in the field including Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theory for Hamiltonian PDEs through his work on the small divisor problem, and progress on the Navier-Stokes and Boltzmann equations. He is the Director of the Applied and Industrial Mathematics Laboratory at McMaster and has provided mentorship to an enormous number of young mathematicians through his academic leadership.

Michael Craton

Michael Craton's scholarship has been profound, voluminous and pioneering. Over thirty years he has helped recast Caribbean and slave historiography. Younger scholars now ask different questions - and adopt different approaches - because of his work. The most eminent scholar in Caribbean history of his generation, he is respected internationally for his imaginative lines of enquiry and precise scholarly reconstruction. 1997 will see the publication of the second volume of his definitive "History of the Bahamian People", but his eight books, together with more than fifty other scholarly publications, have already established his place among the elite of Canadian historians.

Cullen has been on the Canadian Inorganic Chemistry scene for 30 years, and has served it well in many official capacities; he has pioneered research in fluorocarbon-organometallic and organoarsenic chemistries, the former yielding early examples of the now fashionable clusters. The latter area has led to major advances in the understanding of the biochemistry of arsenic. Work on chiral ferrocenyl phosphine ligands and associated Rh catalytic systems (hydrogenation and hydrosilylation) has widened the scope of effective asymmetric synthesis. Cullen was instrumental in establishing a bioinorganic group at UBC via an NRC Negotiated Development Grant, and chairs a group project that has developed the effective asymmetric reduction of imines, which is important industrially.
