John Bechhoefer
Affiliation: Simon Fraser University
Induction Year: 2021

John Bechhoefer’s scientific contributions have ranged over pattern formation, liquid crystals, biological physics, nonequilibrium thermodynamics and statistical physics. Capitalizing on the control that can be exercised over small systems and creatively applying paradigm-shifting theoretical physics, he has tested fundamental principles that link information and feedback with thermodynamics and statistical physics, at scales that are appropriate to bacteria and cells.

Lauren Beck’s research exposes the coloniality of our visual culture that shapes and constrains our identities through social and mass media of any period. She pioneers visual and material means of de-centering the western epistemologies and perspectives that uphold white supremacy and patriarchy to shine light on marginalized peoples and their agency—from women and people of colour to Indigenous peoples—and to amplifying their voices and experiences.

Axel Becke is a scientific leader noted for his work in the application of Density Functional Theory (DFT) to molecules. His computational technique (NUMOL) achieved a level of computational precision unmatched by others and it remains a unique and powerful DFT benchmarking tool. His discrete integration procedure has been adopted in whole or in part by a large number of software developers/vendors who have modified conventional programmes to accommodate DFT. For his work, Dr. Becke has received a number of awards including the Medal of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science, the Noranda Lecture Award of the Canadian Society for Chemistry, the Queenès University Prize for Excellence in Research, and the Schroedinger Medal of the World Association of Theoretically Oriented Chemists. He receives an impressively large number of citations for his publications. However, the real impact of his work is evident in the numerous areas where chemists and physicists have used his methodologies to compute molecular properties of a vast number of complex molecular systems to a degree of accuracy which only a few years ago would have been unthinkable. Research colleagues describe his research contributions as ‘marvelous examples' of theoretical chemistry at its best.

Dr. John Bell
Affiliation: University of Ottawa
Induction Year: 2013
[contact]
John Bell is an international leader in the development of “oncolytic viruses” for cancer therapy. Dr. Bell discovered that many viruses have a natural preference for infecting and killing cancer cells. Their studies have demonstrated that these viruses not only kill the cancer cells, but also stimulate the host to mount an aggressive anti-tumor response that takes over from the viruses to continue the fight against the cancer. There work has led directly to highly successful clinical trials that have established the efficacy of this new therapeutic paradigm.

GRAHAM BELL has worked on several basic issues in ecology and evolution. He helped to develop the modern evolutionary theory of aging, and performed experimental tests of its premises and predictions. His book on the evolution of sex was among the first to argue that the function of sex is to produce recombinant progeny which are resistant to prevailing diseases, and has been followed up by theoretical and comparative investigations of this idea. To pursue these and other issues in the laboratory, he has established "Chlamydomonas" as a model system in which evolutionary mechanisms can be studied in detail under controlled conditions. At the same time, field experiments have linked the laboratory system with the response of native plants to environmental variability in undisturbed primeval forest.
