Yee, Howard - Astronomical Sciences - University of Toronto
Howard Yee is an inventive observational astronomer with a legendary international reputation for optimally using large telescopes for efficient and exacting measurements of very faint galaxies. In two ground-breaking surveys of known galaxy clusters and field galaxies in the redshift range of 0.1 - 0.6 he pinned down the dark matter content of the universe and the recent evolution of both galaxies and clusters. Now his pioneering red-sequence cluster survey has discovered many clusters at much higher redshift, enabling for the first time direct examination of more rapid evolution as clusters grew and galaxies were assembled in a much younger universe.

Dr. Raymond Yong
RSC Fellow, Academy of Sciences
Affiliation: University of Wales
Professor Yong has made outstanding contributions to many areas of geosciences and geotechnical engineering. Among many fields he covered in his numerous papers, he is probably the best known for his investigations of the nature of the bonds among clay particles. The original experimental methodology he used in that research, can serve as a model to be followed in all future studies. Indeed, his masterly treatise on soil strength and properties, published in two books with B. Warkentin, has become a classic used in many universities. Another, very different field in which he has made very remarkable achievements in the last 25 years, is that of traction mechanics, with a particular emphasis on the trafficability of soils and snow for offroad vehicles. In 1976, he formed the McGill Geotechnical Research Centre, which, under his direction, has made highly notable achievements in the area of treatment of gel-like watery sludges created by petroleum extraction from tar sands. His work has lead to many awards, including most recently the Killam Prize and the title of "Chevalier de l'Ordre du Quebec".
