SHOTYK, William -Department of Renewable Resources, University of Alberta Dr. Shotyk has pioneered the use of peat bogs to decipher the global history of metal pollution and environmental changes during the last 15,000 years. His painstaking measurements of the concentrations of lead and its isotopes as well as other metals in dated peat cores and ice layers deposited during the Post-Glacial period currently represent an international reference against which other studies on metal paleo-pollution are calibrated.

Vivek Shraya is an artist whose body of work crosses the boundaries of music, literature, visual art, theatre, and film. Her album Part Time Woman was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize, and her best-selling book I’m Afraid of Men was heralded by Vanity Fair as “cultural rocket fuel.” A seven-time Lambda Literary Award finalist, Vivek is an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Calgary.

Siebrand has developed theories and theoretical models in order to explain selected electronic properties in polyatomic molecules and their crystals. There is ample evidence of his penetrating contributions to our knowledge of molecular crystals, radiationless transitions, vibronic coupling, resonance Raman scattering and photochemistry. The methods used were often developed from scratch and always involved rigorous simplification in order to see the forest instead of the individual trees. His work has been popular with experimentalists and has contributed to the orderly presentation of data, to the recognition of hidden relations between data, and to new experiments. It is clear that his work scores high on originality, physical insight and experimental relevance.

Ray Siemens is Distinguished Professor at the University of Victoria, in English with cross-appointment in Computer Science. His research has revised our understanding of early English poetic tradition and has enriched the academic ecosystem by exploring, testing, and proving the value of emerging digital research, dissemination and collaborative engagement methods – advancing the important mission of the humanities within the academy and in the many communities that humanistic work serves.

Israel Michael Sigal is one of Canada's most distinguished mathematicians. His most spectacular achievement has been his proof (with Soffer) of the asymptotic completeness of multiparticle systems. This work solved a fundamental problem in mathematical physics which had been studied by some of the world's leading mathematicians in both quantum mechanics and differential equations. Sigal's many other important contributions to mathematical physics include theoretical limits on the number of electrons a nucleus can bind, a theory of bound states in multiparticle systems, and the solution (with Ivrii) of a long open problem on the ground state energy of molecules.

Jacques Simard’s international research contributed to the discovery of breast, ovarian and prostate cancer susceptibility genes BRCA1 and BRCA2, resulting in a genetic predisposition test used worldwide. His international studies on deciphering the genetic architecture of breast cancer, provided the long-awaited knowledge to develop personalized risk assessment tools to improve prevention and early detection of the disease, targeting women most likely to benefit, especially through a populational risk stratified screening approach.

Dr. Siminovitch’s discoveries of genetic and molecular pathways underpinning immunologic diseases have elucidated new paradigms of signal transduction and cell biology, illuminating the mechanisms whereby selected classes of signal transducting effectors link extracellular stimuli to cytoskeletal-driven cell responses or to the attenuation of cell responses required for homeostasis.
