Daniel Brooks is among the world's most creative and prolific evolutionary biologists. Primarily responsible for modernizing studies of parasite evolution, he was a leader in developing modern methods for reconstructing evolutionary relationships, and created both the matrix representation method for coevolutionary and historical biogeographical studies, and the comparative phylogenetic approach for studying patterns of biological diversification. Author of Witnessing AIDS and co-editor with Janice Hladki of Embodied Politics in Visual Autobiography, Sarah Brophy pursues research on embodiment, autobiography, and visual culture; race, gender, sexuality, and disability; and post-1945 British literature. She models an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach and is recognized as an outstanding mentor: her students have published in over 20 journals, and in 2012 she won McMaster’s President’s Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision.

Lori Brotto, a Canada Research Chair in Women’s Sexual Health, is internationally recognized as a leader in sexual health research. She has led teams to develop effective psychological interventions to improve sexual dysfunction and genital pain, which collectively affect up to a third of women. Her work has influenced international practice guidelines. In less than ten years since the start of her academic appointment (excluding parental leaves), and 15 years since her PhD, she has achieved over 130 peer reviewed publications, 61 grants, and her book “Better Sex Through Mindfulness”, a translation of her program of research on women’s sexual health, was published in 2018 by Greystone Publishing.

Her illumination of the ways that familial and personal identities interact with cultural constructs of gender, religion, and ethnicity has inspired historians and anthropologists. Patricia Brubaker is Professor of Physiology at the University of Toronto, and known internationally for her pioneering studies illuminating how regulatory peptides are synthesized and secreted from specialized endocrine cells within the gastrointestinal tract. Her discoveries have provided multiple new models for analysis of GLP-1 and GLP-2 secretion, and provided a scientific rationale for development of new peptide analogues for the therapy of diabetes, obesity, and short bowel syndrome.

For his work in Theoretical Chemistry, including contributions to the development of "Coherent Radiative Control of Chemical Reactions", a fundamental theoretical approach to controlling chemical reactions with lasers. Brumer and coworkers have shown how to induce controllable quantum interference effects in molecules through simultaneous optical excitation pathways and, in doing so, how to alter molecular dynamics, electron currents and chemical reaction yields. This development provides insights into the quantum characteristics of molecular processes and affords a direction for applying advanced technologies to the goal of affecting molecular processes at their most fundamental level.
