M. Ram Murty is a leading expert in the application of analytic mehtods to the study of modular forms and elliptic curves, as well as to other related questions of number theory. He has provided best-possible estimates of the coefficients of modular forms which has been previously obtainable only by use of unproved hypotheses. His work on Artin's conjecture on primitive roots provided the first unconditional evidence for this conjecture. Kumar Murty is a mathematician of exceptional range. He has made important contributions of analytic number theory and albebraic geometry. For instance, he proved the Hodge Conjecture for a class of abelian varieties and, with Ramakrishnan, established the Tate Conjecture for certain Hilbert modular surfaces. Further, in joint work with Balasubramanian he obtained striking new results on the non-vanishing of Dirichlet L-functions. In addition, with his brother, Ram Murty, he proved a result on L-functions which, together with the work of Kolyvagin, gave an inportant step towards the proof of the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture in the theory of elliptic curves.
