TIM MOSMANN, Professor and Chair, Department of Immunology, University of Alberta, has made significant contributions to our understanding of immune regulation by cytokines, the small secreted proteins of immune cells. He contributed to the discovery and molecular cloning of several cytokines, notably Interleukin 10 which his laboratory discovered as a result of his theoretical predictions. Dr. Mosmann's major contribution was the discovery of subsets of T lymphocyte secreting different patterns of cytokines that mediate the contrasting functions of these T cells in allergy and infectious diseases. This work has had a major impact on current thinking on immune regulation, and many therapeutic and vaccination strategies are being planned using this paradigm.

His methods and techniques have been adopted by his industrial partners in Canada and abroad, and had an impact on standardization. A broadly humanistic scholar, Dr. Gordon Moyles has written prolifically and trenchantly on Canadian history, law, and culture. He is also in the front rank of textual scholars, applying his expertise not only to the textual history, emendation and editing of John Milton's Paradise Lost but to the major scholarly edition of the poems of E.J. Pratt. In addition, he has done ground-breaking bibliographical research in Canadian literature and history. Alfonso Mucci is an internationally renowned geochemist who launched his career with two highly acclaimed papers laying the foundations for evaluating the ocean's role in the terrestrial carbon flux cycle. Since then, he has made numerous widely cited contributions in the fields of geochemistry and biochemistry. He has, for example, revolutionized the application of spectroscopy in understanding crystal growth mechanisms, developed models for predicting metal behaviour in ocean waters and sediments, and identified the causes of the bottom water hypoxia which likely helped deplete the Eastern Canada fish stocks. Petra Mudie

Dr. Peta Mudie is an outstanding palynologist making superb contributions to the solution to a wide range of geological oceanographic and climatological problems. She made the first modern palynological study of the oceans and sediments of the northwestern Atlantic Ocean and its bordering lands and seas, and so she could make the first comprehensive synthesis of the events marking the onset of cooling and glaciation in high latitude regions of the northwestern Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. She applied this foundation to solve many problems involving past climates and oceanographic conditions of the northern oceans and the Arctic using data teased from the geological record, data extracted under difficult conditions at sea and on the Arctic pack ice.

Derek Muir is an environmental chemist whose work has led to the discovery and understanding of the global movement and bioaccumulation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and trace metals in high latitude and high altitude ecosystems. He was among the first to discover that concentrations of POPs in piscivorous fishes and marine mammals are high enough to pose potential health risks for human consumers. In particular, his work on the biogeochemistry of pesticides and PCBs was important evidence that contributed to the recent international circumpolar treaty to reduce the use of persistent airborne chemicals.

Catherine Mulligan
