Dr. Raymond Yong

Professor Yong has made outstanding contributions to many areas of geosciences and geotechnical engineering. Among many fields he covered in his numerous papers, he is probably the best known for his investigations of the nature of the bonds among clay particles. The original experimental methodology he used in that research, can serve as a model to be followed in all future studies. Indeed, his masterly treatise on soil strength and properties, published in two books with B. Warkentin, has become a classic used in many universities. Another, very different field in which he has made very remarkable achievements in the last 25 years, is that of traction mechanics, with a particular emphasis on the trafficability of soils and snow for offroad vehicles. In 1976, he formed the McGill Geotechnical Research Centre, which, under his direction, has made highly notable achievements in the area of treatment of gel-like watery sludges created by petroleum extraction from tar sands. His work has lead to many awards, including most recently the Killam Prize and the title of "Chevalier de l'Ordre du Quebec".

R. Paul Young is currently Professor of Geophysics and formerly Vice-President (Research) at the University of Toronto (2007-14). He has a PhD in Geophysics, M.Sc. in Rock Mechanics and a B.Sc. in Geological Sciences. He has held the Keck Chair in Seismology and Rock Mechanics at the University of Toronto, the Chair of Earth Science at the University of Liverpool and has been President of the British Geophysical Association. He has been awarded many honours for his research and innovation, notably, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the Willet G. Miller Gold Medal of the Royal Society of Canada for his research in earth sciences, and the John A. Franklin Award for Rock Mechanics by the Canadian Geotechnical Society. He is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is a Chartered Engineer. Over the past 30 years, Professor Young has pioneered techniques used today in monitoring and interpreting induced seismicity in the mining, petroleum and nuclear waste disposal industries.
Through his research groups at Queen's University and the University of Toronto, Keele University and Liverpool University, UK, as well as through spin off companies such as the Engineering Seismology Group (Canada) and Applied Seismology Consultants (UK) significant scientific advances have been made in seismology and rock mechanics. He has published over 220 scientific papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings, supervised over 40 PhD students and post-doctoral research fellows, and developed innovative instrumentation systems for induced seismicity/acoustic emission monitoring.
Professor Young’s research is focused on rock fracture dynamics and induced seismicity with application to natural geologic hazards such as earthquakes and volcanic activity and engineering applications such as mining, hydrocarbon recovery, hydraulic fracturing and deep underground storage for nuclear waste isolation and CO2 sequestration.

Robert Young is a world leader in the chemistry and biology of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, chemical entities that play a central role in respiratory and inflammatory disease. Dr. Young has championed a strategy whereby an understanding of drug metabolism and disposition can lead to a more efficient design of drugs. At Merck Frosst, he initiated the medicinal chemistry program and did many of the early experiments that culminated in the discovery of Singulair®, a valuable medicine for the treatment of asthma. He also headed the team that discovered the drug Vioxx® and Arcoxia®, COX-2 inhibitors which have been widely prescribed for the treatment of inflammation. He has over 100 research publications and review articles, and over 50 patents.
