Induction Year: 2016
[contact]
APARICIO, Samuel – Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, The University of British Columbia
Samuel Aparicio’s work on the genomes of breast cancers has provided new insights into the tremendous breadth of tumour genetic heterogeneity. The cells within tumours are not identical, and tumours are now best thought of as complex communities of cells composed of genetically distinct cellular sub-populations. Dr. Aparicio’s work has linked this genetic heterogeneity to cancer evolution and recurrence, providing a much-needed explanation for how treatment-resistant cancers may arise.

[contact]
LONG CITATION
Prof. Arkani-Hamed is a planetary scientist interested in the internal dynamics of terrestrial planets and the mechanical and magnetic properties of their lithosphere. He has studied the thermal evolution of the planets and the surface manifestation of mantle dynamics, the tectonics of the planets. He first used Apollo gravity and topography data to determine the viscosity of the lunar interior as well as the elastic strength of the lunar lithosphere. He first suggested that Venus became a one-plate planet at ~500 million years ago, later confirmed by Magellan data. He first determined the shear stresses in the Martian lithosphere using Mariner 9 data, in 1975, and later using Mars Global Survey, finding that they were much stronger than that of the Earth. Dr. Arkani-Hamed also estimated that the rotation axis of Mars has wandered by as much as 65 degrees over the last four billion years.

The focus of Arthur's efforts in recent years has been the trace formula for groups of rank greater than one, which indeed, although he owes a good deal to his predecessors, can properly be called his creation. His first papers on the trace formula for groups of rank one were on the whole a development of ideas of Selberg, but his more recent work takes an entirely different approach, raises the subject to a new level, is chock full of ideas and techniques, and reveals Arthur as the current leader in the study of harmonic analysis on reductive groups and in the purely analytic theory of automorphic forms.
