Prof. Valenta has contributed to or directed some of the most notable determinations of natural structures in the last fifteen years. These include diterpenoid alkaloids, Lycopodium alkaloids, the insecticidal alkaloid ryanodine, and the bitter principle quassin. He provided an ingenious demonstration of the stereochemistry of quassin and the Ormosia alkaloids. In addition he has carried out elegant synthesis of natural products. This work has put him in the front rank of organic chemists. He is an excellent and dedicated teacher, and is chairman of his department. Prof. Valenta has played a prominent role in the Chemical Institute of Canada, and In 1967 was honored as Merck, Sharpe and Dohme Lecturer.

"Kabloona and Eskimo", the white man from the Eskimo perspective. The title of Frank Vallee's 1962 book says much about the author himself, and his contribution to understanding Eskimo-white interaction in the changing north through stereoscopic vision rather than solely through white eyes. His 1968 volume "Eskimo of the Canadian Arctic" is now a standard work. A native Montrealer with a 1955 Ph.D from London School of Economics, he returned to direct research in the Department of Citizenship and Immigration before teaching at McMaster from 1957, and moving to Carleton in 1964. His work in the Arctic was the first to see how modern Eskimo society is an adaptation to an ecology in which inter-ethnic relations provide the harshest constraint, not the climate. He put his findings to use while serving as a member of the Northwest Territories Council. Since 1964 the inter-ethnic relations he has studied have been of bilingual communities in southern Canada. Northern perspectives are needed to understand the north; the same perspectives illuminate the south also.

His seminal work on multi-dimensional signal processing has led to novel design techniques to two-dimensional and multi-dimensional filters. His pioneering contributions to non-linear filters and colour image processing have led to promising new families of non-linear filters and colour image processing techniques which have found numerous applications in digital media, biomedicine, geophysics and biometrics. A recipient of numerous awards and honours, an author and co-author of 8 graduate level books and over 830 research publications, his body of work has had major impact on Canada’s research enterprise.

Pierre Verge est un spécialiste reconnu en droit du travail qui a fait sa marque comme chercheur, auteur et professeur. En plus de son enseignement à la Faculté de droit de l'Université Laval depuis 1967, il a été professeur invité dans diverses universités : Sherbrooke, Ottawa, Montréal, McGill, Cambridge (Angleterre), Aix-Marseille, Lyon, Montpellier, Bordeaux. Ses recherches ont fait l'objet de multiples publications dans divers périodiques juridiques, canadiens et étrangers. Il est aussi auteur ou co-auteur de nombreux ouvrages dont : « Les critères des conflits créant une situation d'urgence », 1967, « Comparative Dismissal Law », 1982, « Le droit de grève, fondements et limites », 1985; « Droit du travail », 1991; « Le droit et les syndicats », 1991; « Un droit du travail? Essai sur l'identité du droit du travail », 1997; « La représentation syndicale -visage juridique actuel et futur », 1999. Il a été doyen de la Faculté de droit de l'Université Laval, de 1973 à 1977 et membre du Comité consultatif de l'enseignement du droit du CRSH, de 1980 à 1983.

Paul Villeneuve excelle dans tous domaines de la carrière universitaire. Son savoir en géographie sociale et urbaine et en méthodologie de la recherche se transmet à la fois dans la salle de cours et par la direction d'un nombre inusité de mémoires et de thèses. Ses propres travaux, fort variés et fruits de nombreux projets subventionnés, paraissent dans des dizaines de publications scientifiques en Amérique et en Europe. Il est constamment en demande pour évaluer les travaux des autres. Comme administrateur universitaire, il dirige avec doigté le Centre de recherche en aménagement et développement et comme citoyen, s'engage régulièrement dans les grands débats de l'heure. Sa participation à la politique municipale a marqué l'évolution récente de celle-ci à Québec.
