Chris Andersen is an internationally regarded Indigenous Studies scholar. His books, articles and chapters have contributed to a rethinking of Canada’s past, particularly relating to understanding Métis as an Indigenous people rather than “mixed ancestry” derivatives of First Nations and Inuit communities. Using a rare combination of statistical, archival and legal evidence, Andersen’s work is charting new directions in Canadian scholarship, ushering in a new era of Métis scholarship.

She is internationally recognized for her critical scholarship and leading-edge pedagogical and artistic experimentations in the fields of global citizenship and international development education. Her research problematizes and offers alternatives to mainstream educational approaches that promote simplistic understandings of global problems and solutions, paternalistic engagements between dominant and marginalized groups, and ethnocentric views of justice, sustainability and change.

Kristin Andrews has been instrumental in developing the field of Philosophy of Animal Minds. Her interdisciplinary work in the philosophy of psychology demonstrates evolutionary continuity between human and other animals in ways that challenge human uniqueness claims based on supposedly human-unique cognitive capacities. This prize-winning research has received international attention among scholars and in the popular press, and has practical policy consequences about how we should treat other species.

LONG CITATION Professor Brenda Andrews research deals with the cell cycle, a central function in all living organisms. Using yeast as a model system, she identified crucial transcription factors that govern a key step in the cell cycle; these studies have led to an appreciation of the molecular mechanisms governing expression of hundreds of cell cycle genes. Dr Andrews has elucidated the action of an important cell-cycle kinase, Pho85, which governs many cellular processes including metabolism, division and polarized growth, and whose mammalian counterpart plays key roles in neurogenesis. Her work has yielded extraordinary insight into the workings of the cell-division machinery in all organisms and is a prototype for cell-cycle studies. LONG Jorge Angeles has excelled in the theory and practice of kinematics and dynamics of multibody systems. In these areas his contributions span: a) fundamental concepts; b) computational algorithms; and c) design and implementation. His pioneer work on the singularity analysis of parallel robots, for example, broke ground in the understanding of the functioning of this kind of system, a paradigm of which is the familiar flight simulator, a.k.a. the "Stewart platform." Moreover, Angeles' work on the formulation of the mathematical models governing the dynamics of complex mechanical systems of multiple rigid and flexible bodies, using what he calls the natural orthogonal complement, has led to fast algorithms for robotics applications. While developing new concepts and new methods, Professor Angeles has succeeded in applying them to novel robotic manipulators and mechanical transmissions of which he has designed and commissioned various prototypes. Furthermore, Angeles has supervised or co-supervised 21 Ph.D. and 18 M.Eng. theses, besides a number of M.Eng. projects and B.Eng. Honors theses. The author of numerous journal papers and six books in the above research areas, Angeles is Past President of IFToMM, The International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science, Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering, besides being a Senior Member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Anisman, Hymie - Medical Science - Carleton University Hymie Anisman has been among the lead researchers assessing the effects of stressful experiences on the emergence of psychopathology. This research, which has involved both animal models and humans, has identified key biological processes affected by stressful events, and defined the conditions that favor vulnaribility and resilience to pathology. ------------------ Anisman, Hymie - Medical Science - Carleton University Hymie Anisman is internationally renowned, having produced an original and influential body of research regarding stressor-provoked brain neurochemical changes underlying mental illness. His influence, dating from the early 1970s, was instrumental in determining the trajectory of stress-related research. He was among the first to delineate the conditions under which stressors affect brain neurotransmitters, and the first to show that stressors sensitize biological systems, thereby increasing vulnerability to later illness development and recurrence. He was a pioneer in the emerging field of Psychoneuroimmunology, showing that stressors influence immunological functioning and conversely that immune alterations (cytokines) influence psychological illness.

Artist scholar Erik Anonby probes, taps and maps the contributions of linguistic diversity to individual human experience, collective heritage and survival. Scholarship, community and creative impulse meet in his paintings, poetry, public outreach, seven books, and a body of other academic and popular publications. Recipient of the Humboldt Foundation’s Fellowship for Experienced Researchers, Anonby leads an international 60-member research network in the Atlas of the Languages of Iran (ALI).

ANSLOOS, Jeffrey Paul, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto Jeffrey Ansloos is the Canada Research Chair in Critical Studies in Indigenous Health and Social Action on Suicide. He is one of Canada’s leading scholars addressing mental health and the high rates of suicide among Indigenous youth. Drawing on critical and community-engaged methodologies, Dr. Ansloos’ work is advancing understanding of the social ecologies of suicide and innovative approaches to suicide prevention, mental health promotion, and social policy with Indigenous communities
