Prof. Abbatt (University of Toronto) is recognized worldwide as a leader in atmospheric chemistry. He applies state-of-the-art experimental methods to study how aerosol particles promote cloud formation and interact with atmospheric gases, leading to improved model predictions of stratospheric ozone depletion, global and urban pollution, and climate change. His work bridges the atmospheric science and chemistry communities, and provides a firm foundation for quantitative assessments of societally-important environmental phenomena.

Madame Justice Rosalie S. Abella has decisively shaped Canada's approach to human rights, in particular in the area of employment equity - a term she coined and gave substance to as chair of the Royal Commission on Equality in Employment. Her reasons for judgements, which often serve as judicial watersheds, and her many publications have won her international acclaim. Her outstanding contributions are recognized in 17 honorary doctorates she received, a lecture series named after her, and many other honours.

Ehab Abouheif works at the intersection of ecology, evolutionary and developmental biology. His research made several major breakthroughs revealing how genes and environment interact during development and evolution. Using ant societies as a model, Abouheif uncovered the evolutionary importance of dormant genetic potentials, which can be triggered by environmental stress, and exist in all organisms. He showed how genetic potentials can be harnessed to advance animal/plant breeding, conservation, and medicine.

ABRAHAM, Roberto, Faculty of Arts and Science, University of Toronto Abraham has made important contributions to astrophysics though his work on galaxy morphology and classification. His pioneering work on faint galaxies in the distant Universe revealed the existence of massive evolved galaxies in the distant Universe, which was a major surprise. A particular hallmark of his research is the manner in which he opens up new vistas in parameter space by developing highly innovative astronomical techniques and instruments.

Heribert Adam's comparative work on ethnonationalism stands in the hermeneutic tradition of critical theory. It aims both at understanding inter-group antagonisms and fostering a universal human rights culture that minimizes bigotry and communal strife. Mainly drawing upon Nazi Germany and Apartheid South Africa—where he has been involved in facilitating the "negotiated revolution"—- his nuanced analysis of anti-semitism, colonial racism, and Canadian treatment of minorities goes beyond the conventional preaching of tolerance. Nelson Mandela in prison praised his work. Recently, Adam has critically examined the politics of memory, especially how emerging democracies deal with the crimes of previous regimes.

Jan Franklin Adamowski is an outstanding researcher with an exceptionally wide range of research contributions in the water resources field. He is engaged in pioneering research that integrates both engineering and social sciences, allowing him to be at the forefront of helping to address the pressing need for new approaches to support water resources decision making in the face of increasing challenges and uncertainties.

Alejandro Adem is an internationally recognized mathematical scientist and scholar, and one of Canada’s foremost experts in the field of algebraic topology. He has made important theoretical and calculational contributions to the cohomology of groups and topological symmetries, successfully applying them to solve long-standing conjectures. Through his versatile approach, Adem has opened fertile lines of research connecting areas such as representations, homotopy theory, orbifolds, and aspects of mathematical physics.

Nancy Adler is internationally recognized for developing the field of cross-cultural management, and advancing our understanding of cultural synergy and global leadership–including the leadership of the world’s most senior women. Using innovative arts-based conceptualizations, she has published over 100 scholarly articles. A gifted communicator, Adler has won numerous national and university teaching awards. The author of four books, her International Dimensions book, now has close to a half million copies in print. Professor Adler is the only scholar in Canada to be recognized as a Fellow of both the Academy of Management and the Academy of International Business. Adler is also a visual artist.

Tracie Afifi’s research has advanced our understanding of child maltreatment (including abuse and neglect), mental health, and the factors that may help to improve mental health outcomes following child maltreatment. Her research has been used to advocate for the repeal of laws that allow spanking in Canada, to eliminate corporal punishment in schools in the US, and in informing violence prevention initiatives by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Joseph Agassi is a many-faceted philosopher who has made his major contributions in three fields: the historiography of the history of science; philosophy of science and technology; and philosophy of the social sciences. "Towards an Historiography of Science" presented a critical challenge to the unexamined assumptions of much history of science writing; this challenge has by no means been fully met. Through many publications he has made the case for a philosophy of science and technology "with a human face": according to Agassi the progress of science does not follow a strict formula; it is the outcome of a social setting, democratically instituted, publicly controlled and seeking its rationality in the logic of its situations. "Towards a Rational Philosophical Anthropology" and many other works have criticised the received polarities of the philosophy of mankind: nature vs. convention; reason vs. unreason; perfection vs. imperfection. In their place Agassi seeks a moderate philosophy which is tolerant towards the flawed character of mankind and its achievements and which is optimistic about the critical quest for improvement.

Albert Aguayo developed an experimental technique (nerve grafting) to explore the complex interactions that exist among the components of the nervous system. In a series of small landmark experiments, he used this approach to define some of the interactions that occur in normal and abnormal nerves and to demonstrate the regenerative potential of the central nervous system. By proving that the responses of axons to injury depends on interactions that can be modulated, Albert Aguayo has evolved a novel approach to the study of recovery from injury and disease in parts of the nervous system where this was previously considered impossible.
