According to Statistic Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador has the fastest growing population of seniors in the country.  In general,  older adults have the most prevalent incidence of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.  Physical activity has been well documented as a protective and ameliorating factor for these concerns. In addition to these benefits, physical activity has also been shown to reduce the risk of falls in seniors. Statistics show that 60% of injuries in those over 65 are fall related - an injury that can impact health as well as independence.
This Open Academy event promoted wellness through physical activity.   After a brief introduction of the experts, the event moved into a lively discussion among attendees about falling, mobility and healthy aging. The experts’ diverse backgrounds and research brought a rich variety of perspectives on seniors' well-being.
