Internal Organization of Academies

Council and Committee Members

Academy Council

The Academy Council manages the affairs of the Academy and is responsible to the Society for appointing a member of the Society’s Finance Committee and a member of the Society’s Committee on Fellowship. The Council of each Academy consists of the Officers of the Academy and other members as determined by each Academy.

Academy Committees

Academies conduct much of their business through standing and ad hoc committees. Currently Academies have the following standing committees: an Academy Committee for the Nomination of Officers; an Academy Program Committee; and an Academy Committee for the Selection of New Fellows.

The Committee for the Nomination of Officers solicits nominations for each officer and position on the Executive Committee of the Academy. The Committee consists of two representatives from each Division (three representatives where, as in Academy II, the number of Divisions is less than three) and the Past-President of the Academy as Chair.

The Program Committee of the Academy shall make recommendations to the Council of its Academy on its annual program. Where the Academy is responsible for the Annual Symposium of the Society, by convention members of the Academy Program Committee serve on the Society Program Committee.

The Committee for the Selection of New Fellows reviews annually the recommendations of the Division Committee for the Selection of New Fellows. The Committee consists of the Executive Committee of the Academy and an official from each Division not represented on the Executive Committee.

Division Committees

Each Division has two standing committees and such ad hoc committees as the Division Executive shall determine. The standing committees are the Nominating Committee for the Election of Officers and the New Fellow Selection Committee.

The Division Nominating Committees propose candidates for election as Officers and committee members of the Division and candidates for appointment to the Division Committee for the Selection of New Fellows.

The Division Committee for the Selection of New Fellows reviews nominations of new Fellows to its Division and recommends candidates for election to the Society to the Committee for the Selection of New Fellows. The Committee consists of the Division Director as Chair, the Division Secretary and five to seven Fellows chosen to be broadly representative of the Division disciplines, as well as maintaining linguistic, gender and regional balance.
